ABOUT THE SIGNAL
Cult of the Signal is an evolving institution for strange machines, printed transmissions, questionable biology, and other evidence that should probably have remained inside the cabinet.
THE INSTITUTION
This is a practical art project disguised as an organization and an organization disguised as a transmission. It builds single-purpose computation machines that ask a person to perform a small ritual, make a choice, and leave with physical evidence.
The first apparatus is a divination kiosk: a ghost of a fortune teller inside reclaimed security steel. Other machines may speak through payphones, play games, issue receipts, or interpret signals that have not yet been discovered.
OPERATING DOCTRINE
- The encounter should work without a personal account.
- The artifact should remain useful when the network disappears.
- The machine should feel more like an instrument than an app.
- The fiction may be elaborate; the transaction must be honest.
- The user leaves with something tangible.
